What a CP565 notice means
The CP565 is the IRS's "Notice of ITIN Assignment". It says the IRS gave you an individual taxpayer identification number.IRS
The notice also answers a few common questions. An ITIN is a number for federal tax documents only. It is not for identification outside the tax system, and it does not entitle you to Social Security benefits or the Earned Income Tax Credit or change your immigration status.IRS An ITIN does not give you work authorization or eligibility for Social Security benefits.IRS
What to do when you get a CP565
- Check your name and date of birth. They must be right on the IRS record.IRS
- Keep the letter. The IRS suggests keeping a copy. If you lose it, contact the IRS: 267-941-1000 from outside the U.S. (not toll-free).IRS
- Use the ITIN and the name on the notice on your federal tax returns, and when you write to the IRS.IRS
- Expect your documents back within 60 days of the notice date if you mailed originals. Call the number on the notice if they do not arrive.IRS
- Tell the IRS if you get an SSN. Then stop using the ITIN.IRS
One timing rule to remember: you cannot e-file a return using an ITIN in the calendar year it was assigned. You can e-file in later years.IRS If you need to file a return that year, it goes in on paper.
CP565 vs CP566 vs CP567
Not every ITIN application ends in a CP565. These are the three letters the IRS sends about an application.
| Notice | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| CP565 | The IRS assigned you an ITIN.IRS | Check your name and date of birth, keep the notice. No reply is needed. |
| CP566 | The IRS needs more information. The application may be incomplete or have the wrong documents.IRS | Reply within 45 days with the response form and the documents it asks for, translated into English if requested. If you do not reply, the IRS rejects the application. |
| CP567 | The IRS rejected the application or revoked an ITIN. You may not be eligible, a document may be invalid, or it received no reply.IRS | Read why, then send a new, complete application with a copy of your return attached. You do not need to file a new return. |

The IRS says documents sent with a rejected application come back within 60 days of the notice date, and that it processes your return without an ITIN, so you reapply and attach a copy to get a refund.IRS See our guide on fixing a rejected ITIN application.
