How it works

From your first answer to your ITIN in the mail.

Five steps. Most of it happens online, and your identity is checked on a video call with a Certifying Acceptance Agent.

The journey

Five steps, and who does what

  1. Step 1 · You

    Tell us about you

A short online form: who you are, where you live and why you need a U.S. tax number.

You'll need a valid passport and your U.S. tax reason.

  2. Step 2 · You and an agent

    Video verification

On a video call, you show your documents to a Certifying Acceptance Agent. The agent verifies them and certifies copies for your application.

You'll need a phone or laptop with a camera, and your documents in hand.

  3. Step 3 · Nolly.com

We prepare and check your W-7

We fill in Form W-7 from your answers, and your U.S. tax return if you need one. Then we review everything before it goes anywhere.

  4. Step 4 · Nolly.com

    We file with the IRS

We submit your application and tell you what to expect while the IRS reviews it.

  5. Step 5 · The IRS

    The IRS mails your ITIN

The IRS reviews your application and mails you a letter with your ITIN. Timing is the IRS's: about 7 weeks, or 9–11 weeks in some cases (see below).

What you need

Four things to have ready

A valid passport

It's usually the only ID the IRS asks for. Spouses and dependants may need more.

A U.S. tax reason

For example U.S. rental income, selling U.S. property, income from U.S. platforms, or being a spouse or dependant on a U.S. return.

A camera

A phone or laptop for the video call with a Certifying Acceptance Agent.

A U.S. tax return, if needed

Most applications go in with a federal return. Some qualify for an exception, and we'll tell you which applies.

How long it takes

How long the IRS takes

The IRS asks you to allow about 7 weeks. Applying from overseas, or between January 15 and April 30, takes 9 to 11.

The same. The IRS sets the timing and makes the decision, so we can't change either.

If you're comfortable with the forms and can get your documents to the IRS, applying yourself is a good choice. If you'd rather have someone do it with you, that's what we're for.

It starts with a few questions.
