A U.S. tax number for people who can't get a Social Security number
The IRS issues ITINs to people with a U.S. tax reason who aren't eligible for a Social Security number. It's used for tax purposes only.

Who usually needs an ITIN
You need one when you have to deal with U.S. taxes but can't get a Social Security number. For example:
- You earn rent from U.S. propertyThe income has to be reported on a U.S. return.
- You sold U.S. propertyTax is often held back at the sale and settled on a return.
- You earn money from U.S. platformsDepending on your country, an ITIN can help you claim a lower treaty rate or a refund.
- You are a spouse or dependant on a U.S. returnThey are listed with their own number.
Do you need an ITIN?
Three questions. Nothing is saved or sent.
Do you have, or qualify for, a U.S. Social Security number?
If you can get one, you use it instead of an ITIN.
Do you have a U.S. tax reason?
For example U.S. rental income, selling U.S. property, income from U.S. platforms, or being a spouse or dependant on a U.S. return.
Do you have a valid passport?
It's usually the only identity document you need.
You may qualify for an ITIN
A valid passport is usually all the ID you need, though spouses and dependants may need more. We'll check it on a video call and file your W-7.
You'll need other documents
Without a passport, the IRS accepts a combination of other documents. Talk to us and we'll confirm which we can certify.
Use your Social Security number
If you have or qualify for one, you use it instead. You may still need help with a U.S. return.
You may not need an ITIN right now
An ITIN is issued for a U.S. tax purpose. Not sure whether yours counts? A short call will settle it.
